PERSONALITY: Fuuta is beginning to show the signs of being a well-adjusted, responsible adult. He takes responsibility for his actions, he carefully weighs the outcomes and consequences of most situations, and he knows to separate himself from things that will hurt himself, someone else, or his reputation. And when it comes down to sink-or-swim, he performs brilliantly under the pressure. He can handle high-stress situations with a cool head, which makes him a goo person to turn to when there's trouble.
However, this doesn't mean it's impossible to get to him. Just like with any other human, Fuuta has his buttons. He gets short and cranky with whoever pushes those buttons, and he easily becomes a 'straight man' of sorts to another person's absurdity. He will do his best to suppress this and act professional when it's an important situation, but in everyday life he's more likely to snap at people goofing off.
But Fuuta isn't all srs bznss all the time. He puts on a professional front at school or when fighting shadows, but in his free time he's actually a very relaxed and friendly guy. He loves watching TV dramas, soap operas, and movies, but he keeps that to himself because he doesn't think it's a manly interest. He also likes artsy things, like painting or drawing, and he's more willing to share that with others. And if you ask him to do something in his free time, he'll probably agree to it. As long as he's not busy or overly-stressed, then he's a cool guy to spend time with.
Finally, Fuuta has a bit of a protector complex. Ever since he found out about SEES and the Dark Hour, Fuuta has taken it upon himself to do whatever he can to help those kids. His Persona isn't the strongest, as he discovered his much later then others, so he helps out in other ways: covering for the students' absences from school, getting them into places teenagers wouldn't normally be able to get, giving them extra time to complete assignments, and so forth. But despite this, he still feels guilty because he can't always be involved in the fights. Whenever someone gets hurt in a fight with the shadows, Fuuta feels guilty. He feels that it should be the adults doing the fighting, not children.
BACKGROUND: As the oldest son of the Akasaka family, Fuuta was destined to someday inherit the family business: a multi-million dollar insurance corporation based in Tokyo. That meant that he had everything chosen for him from the day he was born. He had no choice in his schools, his future college degree, or even his future wife. Any time he tried to do something outside of what his parents decided ended in failure and even disaster, and after some time he just stopped trying. He never had to worry about going hungry or not having any of the basic necessities of life, but he hated that he could only do what he was told he could do. Everything may have been handed to him on a silver platter, but that silver platter came with a very short chain.
There was one thing that Fuuta took pride in: being an older brother. He had a younger brother and sister, and they had much more freedom then he did. However, Fuuta never resented them for having that freedom. In fact, he was happy for them, and he worked even harder at pleasing their parents so that they could do what they wanted with their lives. He also worked hard at being a good brother to them by helping them with their homework and keeping them out of trouble. All of this earned him a lot of praise from his family and their business partners. They would say what a good brother and responsible son he was, and how he would make the Akasaka family proud. Fuuta absorbed the praise like a sponge, and he felt that he could live this life as long as he could take care of his siblings.
Sadly, it wasn’t meant to be. When Fuuta was ten, his sister Kyoko died. The entire family was crushed by her death, but Fuuta took it especially hard. He had been right there when she had died, but he hadn’t been able to do anything to save her. He beat himself up for years and years after that, telling himself that a good brother would have protected their little sister. If he couldn’t do that, then how good of a brother (and, by extension, a son) was he?
For years he just existed, doing what his parents wanted and not making a peep. His spirit was broken, and he felt like nothing good would come out of his life. He still took care of his little brother, of course, but even that didn’t have the same spark it had before. He had messed up with Kyoko, so what if he messed up with Shinta? And there was even more pressure on him now, since he was about to go to college. What if he didn’t get into the best schools? He had messed up once already, so he had to succeed. If he didn’t, then he didn’t know what he would do with himself.
But when he was in his senior year of high school, everything changed completely. Shortly after the summer break, a student by the name of Ichigawa Ren transferred into Fuuta’s class. At first Fuuta hated Ren, as Ren was so relaxed and chill about everything in life. Fuuta only knew a life of strict rules and even stricter adults, so in his mind anyone that didn’t take life seriously was a slacker who wouldn’t amount to anything in life. But for some reason he was compelled to talk to Ren, maybe to try to teach him how to behave properly or maybe to just understand WHY he was like that. Fuuta ended up talking more about his own life, though, and through that Ren posed the question that ended up changing Fuuta’s life: Why? Why did he care? Why did he do all of that work for something he didn’t want? And when Fuuta finally thought about the ‘why’ is when he realized that he didn’t want to go through with this life that had been decided for him. He wanted to make his own life.
His parents didn’t take to that very well, though. He told them on the day of his graduation, and when it was clear that his parents wouldn’t support his decision he just walked away. He didn’t want anything to do with that destructive life, and he felt a great weight get lifted off of his chest as soon as he was done with it. The Ichigawa family took him in after that, and he even adopted their last name. They were much more of a family to him then his family had ever been, so it seemed fitting. So he went on to college to become a teacher instead of a businessman. He was content with his choices not only because he liked teaching. but because it was HIS choice.
He still felt guilty, though. He had basically walked out on his family, leaving behind his younger brother to pick up the pieces. His brother would be trapped in the same way he had been, and he was sure that his brother resented him for it. He had begun to make his own choices and to live his own life, but he felt like he wasn’t responsible enough to take care of others. He smiled on the outside, but the guilt was eating him up on the inside.
All he wanted out of life was some peace and quiet, but he made the mistake of moving to Iwatodai. Sure, for the first few years it was alright, but then strange things started to happen. People suddenly got apathy syndrome overnight, several of his students were missing class and ending up in the hospital, and he started having horrible nightmares almost every night. He had no idea what to do about it all, and he was just growing more and more exhausted from the lack of sleep and the frustration of dealing with his students who were involved in things they clearly shouldn’t have been involved in. But then all of the tension snapped suddenly, as Fuuta was seriously injured by a shadow. He ended up in the hospital for a week or so after that, and he couldn’t just ignore the huge claw-shaped cuts that were gradually turned to scars. He had to face the reality that life wasn’t what he had been expecting, and that he was involved in something much bigger then he had ever imagined.
Once he found out the truth, Fuuta always did his best to protect his students who were involved. It felt like the natural thing to do, most likely because he had done the same thing with his own siblings, but he was nervous about all of it. He had failed his siblings, so how could he be sure that he wouldn’t fail his students too? He didn’t want to mess up again, but he didn’t want to leave the students to their own devices either. So he stayed, despite his gut feeling not to get involved.
During his time in Iwatodai, Fuuta also found out about something else that would change his life. When he was in college, Fuuta had a fling with a female classmate. It was only one weekend just before graduation, but the girl had gotten pregnant from it. She had planned to tell Fuuta right away, but because Fuuta was in the process of changing his name and moving to a new city after graduation he had just slipped through the cracks. It wasn’t until years later that she had tracked him down, and she finally introduced Fuuta to his son Fuuichi.
For several months Fuuta saw Fuuichi every other weekend. It was about all they could manage, as Fuuichi and his mother lived in Inaba, which was a good distance from Iwatodai. Fuuta also struggled with the idea of being a father. He had just gotten used to the idea of protecting his students part-time, and he wasn’t sure what to do with a child. He had no confidence in himself, and he almost wished that he could just send money to Fuuichi’s mother and leave it at that. But he knew he couldn’t do that. There was no way he could allow his own flesh and blood to grow up without a father, so he had to step up and do what was right.
Because of that, Fuuta decided to transfer to Inaba and be the father he was supposed to be. He wasn’t going to move in with Fuuichi’s mother, but living in the same town meant that he could see him more often. He decided to wait until after the whole fiasco with the shadows and Nyx was over, though, as there would be no point to move anywhere if the world had ended. He was sure they would find a way, but he wanted to wait to make sure. And he wanted to be there to help his students in the final battle, too. Once that was over he could settle down and finally forget about this whole shadow business.
